The largest swarm of locusts that hit India in Gujarat for more than a quarter century has caused massive damage to the main crops in the western state.
More than 25 thousand wheat, rapeseed, caraway seeds and potatoes were attacked, with at least a third of the crops being damaged in 75% of the affected areas, according to the state agricultural department.
Although the locust outbreak was controlled by insecticides, some farmers in the state have lost all of their crops and may need replanting, the Department of Agriculture said.
About 285 villages are teeming with locusts and farmers will be compensated in the amount of $ 257 per hectare, RC Agriculture Minister Faldo told Twitter.
Locust eats everything that is green, no matter what. If locusts are placed in an enclosed space, then having eaten all the greens, it will begin to eat its green relatives.
The swarms probably came from Pakistan, whose economy is at risk after locusts fed wheat, cotton, rape and other crops for six months. In Pakistan, authorities charged with protecting crops have hired planes to spray pesticides in the most affected regions.
Cotton, the main producer of which is Gujarat, has not been harmed since it is not grown too widely in the attacked areas, the State Department of Agriculture said. According to him, last week sown area under winter crops amounted to 3.55 million hectares.
