The Pakistan Dairy Association (PDA) approached the country's prime minister and prime minister's adviser on finance with a letter requesting the cancellation of the introduction of a 10 percent sales tax on high-fat milk products levied under column eight of the Tax Act since 1990 sales.
In Pakistan, the main products classified as fatty milk are tea bleaches and fortified infant formula for the growth of children, designed to combat malnutrition.
Predicting the implications of introducing a government-proposed sales tax on fatty dairy products, Pakistani Dairy Association Chairman Zulfikar Khalid Sheikh said the following.
“This policy will not only harm the dairy industry, but also force consumers to return to falsified and unhygienic bulk milk due to higher prices for tea bleaches and other basic dairy fatty foods for growing children.”
Zulfikar Khalid Sheikh also said that tea bleach was mainly used by the poorer segment of society as an alternative to unhygienic and falsified bulk milk available on the market and the introduction of a tax on it will hit the poor.
