Shelves of Ukrainian stores flooded with Chinese garlic. And this despite the fact that many farmers in Ukraine are engaged in its cultivation. But it is more convenient for retailers to work with Chinese products because of its voluminous batches.
Competition for Chinese garlic in the Ukrainian market is often a product from Egypt, which is abundant in stores in the spring. Garlic grown in Ukraine can only be found on the market.
Garlic producers in Ukraine are already growing it not only for the domestic needs of the country, but also actively exporting it. Throughout 2018, Ukrainian-made garlic was supplied to Poland, Georgia, Belarus, Austria, and the Baltic states.
But at the same time, the main producers of garlic remain personal subsidiary plots of the population. There are extremely few producers in the country who grow crops on an industrial scale.
In 2018, Ukrainian industrial enterprises grew less than 3 thousand tons of garlic. At the same time, garlic was grown on a total area of 22.6 ha. Of these, in private farms - 21.5 hectares.
According to agricultural market observer Larisa Guk, small producers are not able to collect a large batch of garlic. And retailers will not look for a product in private households. It is easier for them to work with Chinese manufacturers who can supply a large number of products.
