The National Farmers Union of Canada believes that farmers' markets are an important component of local food systems, but they may be at risk due to provincial and municipal health guidelines that result in business closures or restrictions on number of people and distance protocols.
Concerns over food supply chains in the face of the consequences and limitations caused by the COVID-19 virus have prompted the National Farmers Union to demand that farmer markets be declared as basic services.
Currently, there are about 230 thousand farms in Canada. Each farmer averages about 1800 hectares of land.
There are more than 650 farmer markets in Canada, some of which operate year-round, and most only seasonally.
Hilary Moore, a member of the board of the Union in Ontario, said concerns were raised when Halifax refused to work on farmers' markets and encouraged operators to develop delivery systems for their products instead.
Direct speech: “Such thinking seems popular,” Moore said. She said that some market operators in Saskatchewan went the same way.
Direct Speech: “Ontario's farmers markets have just issued a statement that they encourage the closure of markets. Some have closed because they are controlled by the city, or their owner decided to close. ”
However, in Thunder Bay, Ontario, for example, the farmer's market has been declared necessary and will remain open.
