Dubai: as temperatures soar to the highs of the 40s, local dairy farms are back at work to protect their cattle from desert heat like a blast furnace. Extreme heat and humidity can be dangerous for dairy cows, reducing milk production and threatening their health and ability to endure calves.
Control temperature. The extensive Korral Kool system, consisting of 850 air fans, was installed on the extensive Al Rawabi farms of the Al Al Khawaneej area in Dubai. This system allows dairies in hot climates to get maximum production, which was previously only available where it was cool.
On average, a dairy cow gives about two hundred thousand glasses of milk throughout its life.
A large amount of water. In summer, 1,800 cubic meters of water are used daily on a farm, compared to about 400 cubic meters in winter. The trough drinking system also works overtime, giving thirsty animals up to 80 liters of clean drinking water to guarantee optimal milk withdrawals.
Heat stress affects milk production, but its effect on cow fertility and overall health far exceeds the summer period. Farms overcome this problem with intelligent ear tags that not only track the activity of each cow, but also deliver real-time health and heat alerts to veterinarians.
On average, a dairy cow gives about two hundred thousand glasses of milk throughout its life. Cows are more sensitive to heat stress, because the good microflora in their rumen, which breaks down cellulose, also produces a significant amount of heat. It is akin to having a furnace inside the body of a cow all year long.
