Potato growers in Western Australia have joined an international campaign to combat the decline in potato consumption caused by the popularity of low-carb diets.
The campaign, developed by the International Potato Center, encourages people to "imagine a world without potatoes." Potato consumption in Australia is declining, with less fresh potato consumed than frozen packaged potatoes.
The new campaign is based on the existing Todatoes campaign (slogan: “potatoes are not only on Sundays”), created after the deregulation of the WA potato industry in 2016.This reform eliminated the strict quota system that has existed since the 1930s, and has led to consecutive litigation between the potato regulator and state producer Tony Galati.
The resulting oversupply is one of the problems facing the industry, which has already faced a drop in demand caused by the predominance of low-carb diets in global health trends. This is a problem that potato producers have been struggling with over the past 20 years. Australia has no national potato marketing strategy.Share
