A sharp decrease in the number of homestead farms raising pigs in Ukraine will have a positive impact on the fight against ASF, said Arthur Loza, an independent consultant in the pig industry.

Not only the difficult economic situation, but also the periodic outbreaks of African swine fever undermine the industry from the inside. Against this background, the reduction in the number of private households, which is today observed in Ukraine, will be a positive factor. Indeed, it is precisely such farms that are most defenseless against ASF.

In the segment of industrial pig breeding, there is a gradual increase in livestock, which positively affects the industry as a whole. The number of farms with a livestock of more than 5 thousand individuals amounted to over 37% in mid-2018 and this indicator continues to grow. More than 50 large farms in Ukraine are the main pillar of the industry, added Arthur Loza.
