Summer residents who want to have a lawn cover in their area often doubt when to plant lawn grass. To get a beautiful and blooming lawn, you need to know the timing and rules for sowing it.
Is it possible to sow lawn grass in August
Planting grass in the summer, namely in July - August, is quite positive, according to many gardeners. It is worth considering that at this time of the year you will have to spend more on seeds, because part of them will simply burn out due to high temperature, and the remains of unused ones will need to be sifted out to burned-out places. More plentiful watering is also necessary, because in summer the soil dries much faster.
Important! When planting lawn grasses on a site, it is important to remember that they give off a large amount of moisture, which will greatly affect the air humidity in the whole site.
If you exclude these points, then landing in the summer does not cause any trouble and even benefits:
- providing the necessary care, after a week you can wait for the first shoots;
- there is time before the snowfall to see the sown areas and to correct the situation;
- the lawn will delight the eye with its greenery before the blow of the first frosts.
How to plant a lawn in August
Summer planting of lawn grass, as in the rest of the year, requires at least minimal knowledge and appropriate tools. The following describes in detail when it is best to sow, with what tools and how to prepare the site.
Did you know? The lawn is able to hold a significant part of the dust, which helps to clean the air.
Landing time
It is better to choose the time for planting the lawn in such a way that before the first frosts there is still at least 1.5–2 months. During this time, the plants will have time to grow stronger and rise. It is best if you finish sowing the lawn before mid-September, because if you plant already after September 25, the lawn grasses simply will not sprout and the seeds will die, so it’s best to sow everything at the end of August, then the coating will have time to ascend and take root on the site.
Landing methods and necessary tools
For soil preparation and planting, a certain set of tools is needed, which include:
- rake (from metal or wood);
- wooden slats for leveling the territory;
- mosquito net to protect seeds from solar radiation;
- fertilizers (Agrecol, Green Guy, etc.);
- watering can for watering;
- Libra.
High-quality seed material is also needed. It is best to choose one in which different lawn grasses are combined, which will allow the coating to better take root in the area.Two methods of planting a lawn can be distinguished: this is sowing with a seeder and manual. The first option is used on plots larger than 10 m².
This method is good because it speeds up the sowing process, minimizes labor costs and saves seeds (because you can manually sow a lot of excess). Seeders for the lawn are chosen mainly depending on the area. A mechanical one is suitable for larger areas, and a manual one is suitable for smaller areas.Did you know? One of the US sites offers gardeners to rent a goat instead of a lawn mower, which can “Mow” and “fertilize” the lawn.
Site preparation
In order for the lawn to please your eye, it is imperative to prepare the soil before planting. To do this, remove all rubbish from the site, the remains of plants and roots of shrubs, if there are stumps, dig them out. Further, the whole soil needs to be dug up and treated with various chemicals that prevent the appearance of parasites. The soil for sowing should not be too wet, but if so, drainage will help.
To do this, you must:
- Remove the topsoil with a shovel.
- The liberated area must be tamped and covered with pebbles (20 cm layer), and sand (10 cm) on top of it.
- After these manipulations, the top layer is returned back.
Sowing rules and instructions
One of the main rules - the calculation of the material must be done when buying, observing the proportion - 30 g per 1 m². Before planting, mix the seeds with sand in a ratio of 1: 3. Next, the resulting mixture is divided into two parts: one is sown along the site, the other across.
Important! If the territory was abandoned, it is best to treat the parasites twice.
As mentioned above, for summer sowing, you need to take twice as many seeds, because some of them will not sprout. Also, after planting, the soil is treated with mineral fertilizers ("Agrecol" and others). Finally, it is worth leveling the soil with a rake so that the seeds lie evenly and penetrate deeper into the ground.
As already mentioned in the article, lawn planting in August is permissible and even has a very positive effect on the final result. The main thing is timely care, the right approach to sowing and a little time.
