Valencian onion farmers in regions such as L'Horta, Camp de Turia and La Ribera have great difficulty selling their crops early in the campaign.
Prices offered in the first sale and purchase transactions range from 0.1 to 0.14 euros per 1 kg, which is significantly lower than the cost and fell to one third of the price. The agrarian organization warns that this market decline threatens the profitability of onions, thereby exacerbating marketing problems that already affect vegetables from the Valencian garden, such as artichokes, beans or salads.
Onions are considered the most common food product in the world.
The main reasons for the low demand for local onions are, on the one hand, the closure of the HORECA channel, since large specimens are usually paid at a higher price in restaurants and when exported to destinations such as the UK and Germany; and on the other hand, imports from abroad, especially from South America, New Zealand and South Africa, which crowd out local production on the shelves of wide distribution and serve as a pretext for lower prices. In addition, supermarket chains make an exhaustive selection of products, which leads to fewer marginal buyers and lower offers of medium-sized sweet onions, which are consumed throughout the country.
Among the most affected seasonal vegetables is the artichoke. About 30% of the crop remains on the field, and, if there is a point of sale, farmers are offered from 0.18 to 0.2 euros per 1 kg, a price that does not compensate for the costs of production and hiring labor to collect it.
The Association of Vegetable Producers asks that preference be given to national products that are going through difficult times.
