China is facing a shortage of meat caused by an outbreak of African swine fever. In addition to eating dog meat, Chinese citizens also turned to rabbit meat.
The price of pork in China jumped 69.3%. That is why the Chinese government decided to lift the ban on imports of chicken and eggs from the United States.
In particular, China banned the import of poultry products from the United States in early 2015 after the bird flu epidemic. The Chinese still have not lifted the ban, despite the fact that the threat of bird flu among poultry in the United States has not existed since 2017.
As part of other measures to address the deficit problem, China has postponed some proposed tariffs for pork products in the US this fall and continued to purchase pork and beef in Canada.
The Trump administration estimates that the Chinese market can consume poultry at $ 1 billion per year. Observers say this could be a huge advantage for US poultry, especially since the Chinese are used to eating parts of the bird such as chicken legs that Americans don’t eat.
